A Better Sound
The Softube story began in 2003, when, as his thesis work, masters student Oscar Öberg took on the task of finding a better way to digitally emulate the sound of a guitar amp. Joined by trombonist Arvid Rosén, bass and piano player Niklas Odelholm, and rock 'n' roll singer Torsten Gatu, Oscar subsequently founded one of the greatest companies-that-could-have-been-a-band of all time.
Softube has since grown to employ enough people for a small orchestra and has attracted individuals from around the world who combine musical talent and passion with crucial skills, be it in DSP development or graphic design.

Piece by Piece
At the time of Softube’s founding, the leading amp-modeling technology was convolution – the capturing and reproduction of the output when feeding a system an impulse, a short burst of noise, at different settings. Although this 'black-box' technique could produce accurate results at the recorded settings, it couldn’t faithfully represent the gaps between those settings or the extremes to which a system might be pushed.
The four founders decided the only way forward was to take the amp apart, electronically measure every individual component, and reproduce the effect of each piece of the circuit in computer code. This approach represented a breakthrough in the digital modeling of such analog systems and led to the development of a component-modeling DSP toolbox that is essential to Softube’s success making everything from synthesizers to saturation knobs.

Take Your Partner
Oscar’s masters thesis led to a partnership with Marshall, for whom Softube is still the preferred software partner, creating all the code in the Code series of amps, for instance. And other partners soon followed. Softube has developed software for Fender, Abbey Road Studios, Native Instruments, Ableton and TC Electronic, Universal Audio, Propellerhead, Cakewalk, PreSonus, and Avid. And many of Softube’s own plug-ins are the products of partnerships with top hardware manufacturers, such as Solid State Logic, Weiss, Trident, Valley People, Doepfer, Buchla, Tube-Tech, Summit Audio, Tonelux, and Mutronics.
The trust the industry places in a small business operating far away on the edge of the arctic circle is testament to the quality of the results Softube can produce.

Expanding into Hardware
After more than a decade making impressive software tools, Softube is now developing intuitive and intelligent ways to integrate hardware into your in-the-box workflow, giving you the best of both worlds. The Console 1 hybrid hardware/software mix system, which smoothly and affordably adds the efficient hands-on workflow of a hardware console to the versatility and reliable sonic excellence of Softube’s software (in the form of a fully licensed and endorsed Solid State Logic SL 4000 E-series console emulation), has become the centerpiece of many a studio.
